David Da Yong Chen received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1993 from University of Alberta, where he also received postdoctoral training in Chemistry and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. In July 1994, he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently a Full Professor in the Faculty of Science, as well as an Associate Member of the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics in the Faculty of Medicine.  In December 2013, he was appointed Guest Professor at the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Nanjing Normal University. Dr. Chen’s research interests include investigation of principles of fluid migration and chemical separation, development of novel instrumentation and analytical methods, and coupling micro separation systems to mass spectrometry. Dr. Chen was given the 2002 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Award in Analytical Separation Methods, and the 2003 Charles McDowell Award for Excellence in Research, a gold medal given to the most outstanding young scientist at UBC.  For his contribution in analytical chemistry, Dr. Chen received the W. A. E. McBryde Medal and the Maxxam Award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2008 and 2015, respectively.

内容纲要:

Topics on October 24th, 2020:

1. Analytical science, key to understanding life

Origin of analytical science, history and perspective of the role it played in the society will be discussed.

2. Whats in a number?

When a number is reported in chemistry or in pharmaceutical science, it usually carries far more meaning than people normally think.  An in-depth discussion will be presented regarding to the true value, the mean, the standard deviation, Student t’s test, null hypothesis, and p-values associated with a number.

3. Lets there be light

The properties of electromagnetic radiation and the types of interactions between light and molecules will be discussed.  The principles of spectroscopic methods such as UV-Vis Absorption, Infrared and Raman, and NMR, will be introduced.

Topics on November 8th, 2020

1. Separation Science, where there is color

Whyis the most often used separation method calledchromatography? An introduction of the principles of chemical separation will be presented. Commonly used separation techniques such as liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and gel electrophoresis will be introduced.

2. Life and molecules

A closer look at the biomolecules and how their structures are determined.  Technologies used in DNA sequencing and protein analysis will be discussed.  Mass spectrometry and related technologies such as metabolomics and proteomics will be introduced.

  1. Recent research and development in analytical science

Real examples of research topics will be presented.
